THE BEGINNINGS OF CREATIVE WORK
Very late! Not before university. And my first works were scientific. I never wrote poetry or prose in my youth. I loved reading, that was all. I wanted to be near literature in any capacity available to me.
I did not publish my first piece of fiction until I was forty! Before that, I had published exclusively works of history and literary science. My first book was essentially theoretical.
Of course, those who study literature scientifically are also writers. Although, they are more commonly referred to as theoreticians, historians or scholars.
IS A WRITER BORN OR MADE? TALENT OR EDUCATION?
I do not have a definitive answer to that! I am inclined to believe that a writer is born, but that is only the starting point, to be followed by a long period of honing one’s skill, perfecting one’s craft, practicing, making tremendous efforts and acquiring experience. I never took part in a creative writing workshop, I don’t know what they’re taught there. I suspect it might be interesting. It might be the way to learn many shortcuts to things I had to discover the hard way. I don’t know!
Writing is, actually, gruelling manual labour! Very few people are aware of that. The level of exhaustion and tiredness are absolutely comparable to digging, a difficult sport, weightlifting… Your muscles and bones ache, your immunity drops, it is a spasm that causes bodily reactions, rather than just mental exhaustion.
FAVOURITE TIME TO WRITE
Usually in the evening, or early at night. It makes sense. For me, at least. I can find peace then.
Although, writers create at different times of the day or night. Врло је индивидуално.
WRITING RITUALS
Yes, I have them. Mostly they are about concentration. Above all, the environment in which I work must be tidy and clean. I cannot stand chaos. Nowadays, computers go a long way towards ensuring your table is not cluttered with piles of books you use, bits and pieces of paper, notebooks, map… I like to keep it almost sterile. Just the screen and I.
I also have one ibis bird from Egypt. It resembles a golden egg, with its beak sticking out like a sharpened pen. It is the symbol of scribes and writers. The god of wisdom, knowledge, the moon. Sometimes, I would hold that golden “egg” in my hand.
THE URGE TO WRITE
For the most part, it is a discovery of the world and of oneself. You explain and clarify something to yourself as you write. Also, writing is an enormous pleasure, almost libidinous. It has the energy of love, infatuation, it feels a lot like that… Writing also gives you tremendous power. It is multifaceted… Oceans of ink have been used to try and explain the urge to create, but to no avail. A God particle, maybe… It is something that is much greater than you, but for a while you can hold it inside your tiny self.
THEMES, CHARACTERS
They are everywhere, literally. In my case, since my prose is more or less autobiographical/biographical, it did not take must effort from my part. The themes somehow seem to fall from the sky, as if they were searching for you, and all you need to do is to recognise and accept them. It is all rather diffusive.

WORK THAT TOOK THE LONGEST TO WRITE
Let’s flip things around: I finished my novel A Parisian Kiss in about a month and a half. Of tireless, incessant work. It is an incomprehensibly short time for writing a novel.
And then I came down with a serious illness. A very serious one!
UNFINISHED WORKS
Yes, there are some. They deal with dreams and with everything about dreams. Mine and other people’s. I have been struggling for years to shape this cacophony into an interesting piece of writing that works as literature. Unfortunately, it all just doesn’t seem to blend.

ÊTRE ÉCRIVAIN
DÉBUT DE LA CRÉATION
Très tard ! Uniquement dans les studios. Et c’est du travail scientifique. Je n’ai jamais écrit de poèmes ou de prose dans ma jeunesse. J’aimais lire et c’est tout. J’ai toujours voulu être près de l’écriture d’une manière ou d’une autre.
Je n’ai pas écrit mon premier livre de fiction avant l’âge de 40 ans. Avant cela, je n’avais que des articles en histoire et en études littéraires. Mon premier livre est, après tout, théorique.
Bien sûr, un écrivain est aussi quelqu’un qui étudie la littérature. Bien qu’il soit plus couramment utilisé comme théoricien, historien, scientifique.
NAISSANCE OU DEVENIR, TALENT OU APPRENTISSAGE
Je ne sais pas tout à fait ! Je pense que c’est quand même inné, et puis qu’il y a un long endurcissement, un métier, une pratique, un travail énorme, de l’expérience. Je n’ai jamais assisté à un atelier d’écriture créative, je ne sais pas ce qu’ils leur apprennent. Je pense que c’est intéressant. J’ai appris beaucoup de choses que j’ai apprises à la dure. Je ne sais pas.
L’écriture est, en fait, un travail physique très difficile ! Presque personne ne le sait. L’épuisement et la fatigue sont absolument égaux à un peu de creusement, de sport lourd, de musculation... Les muscles sont douloureux, les os, l’immunité diminue, c’est une crampe qui provoque des problèmes physiques, pas seulement un épuisement mental.
TEMPS D'ÉCRITURE
Généralement le soir ou tôt dans la nuit. Logique. Du moins pour moi. La paix règne à cette époque.
Les écrivains écrivent à des moments différents du jour et de la nuit. C’est très individuel.
RITUELS PENDANT L'ÉCRITURE
Oui La plupart d’entre eux sont liés à la concentration. Tout d’abord, l’environnement dans lequel je travaille doit être bien rangé et propre. Pas de chaos. Aujourd’hui, grâce à l’ordinateur, il est plus facile de ne pas s’éparpiller dans un tas de livres que l’on utilise, des papiers et des bouts de papier, des cahiers, des dossiers... J’adore le fait qu’il soit presque stérile. L’écran et moi..
J’ai aussi un oiseau Ibis d’Égypte. Il ressemble à un œuf d’or avec un bec comme une plume pointue. C’est un symbole du scribe et de l’écrivain. Dieu de la sagesse, de la connaissance, de la lune. Parfois, je tiens cet « œuf » d’or dans ma main.
BESOIN D'ÉCRITURE
Une grande partie de cela consiste à apprendre à connaître le monde et à se connaître soi-même. Vous expliquez et clarifiez quelque chose à vous-même pendant que vous écrivez. Ensuite, écrire est un immense plaisir, presque libidnal. Il a l’énergie de l’amour, de l’infatuation, quelque chose comme ça. Vous avez également un pouvoir énorme lorsque vous écrivez. Il y a de nombreux aspects... Les océans d’encre n’expliquaient pas la nécessité de la création. Une bénédiction de Dieu... Il est beaucoup plus grand que vous, et vous pouvez le placer dans un petit moi pendant un certain temps.
THÈMES, PERSONNAGES
Ils sont partout. Dans mon cas, comme ma prose est plus ou moins autobiographique, je n’ai pas eu à faire d’efforts particuliers. Les sujets tombent en quelque sorte du ciel, comme s’ils vous cherchaient, et que vous aviez juste besoin de les reconnaître, de les accepter. C’est très diffus tout cela ensemble.
ŒUVRE PRÉFÉRÉE
« Album de voyage » (« Putni album »).
ŒUVRE ÉCRITE LA PLUS LONGUE
Renversons la vapeur : un roman « Le Baiser de Paris » (« Pariski poljubac »). Je l’ai écrit en un mois et demi environ. Travailler sans arrêt. Un temps incroyablement court pour écrire un roman.
Et puis je suis tombé très malade. Beaucoup!
ŒUVRES INTERMINÉES
J’en ai. Quelque chose avec des rêves et des rêves. Le vôtre et celui de quelqu’un d’autre. J’ai eu du mal pendant des années à faire tenir cette foule dans un texte intéressant qui fait le buzz. Mais ça ne marche pas, donc ça ne marche pas.
